The Dirty Picture is a movie on the life of Southern Iten dancer Silk Smitha, directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor.
Vidya Balan - (Reshma) changes into Silk, enters the movies and tears her way to the top using the aging superstar Surya - (Naseeruddin Shah). Actress Vidya Balan's bold performance is the major attraction in the movie. She has just one dream, to make it big in the industry and she could do anything for it. She gets whatever she wants but loses her identity of a small town girl. There are others she meets along the way, Surya's writer brother Ramakant - (Tusshar Kapoor), the clever filmmaker Abraham - (Emraan Hashmi) who has only dislike for her and the many directors who use her sensuality to bring in the front-benchers and the moolah. There is a negation at the beginning that this film is based on the story. But, of course, that is a delicate cover for a film on the life of Silk Smitha who committed suicide at the end of career that saw amazing celebrity.
The problem with ‘The Dirty Picture’ is that we never really get a grip on Silk's character. The Dirty Picture does not focus on the scandal, but the tragic story of the Silk Smitha, who provided titillation to thousands of viewers, but died a lonely and tragic death. Here is a woman who revels in her body, looks on knowingly as the filmmaker offering her her first job watches her lustily and, given her first stab in front of the camera, wants to impress the choreographer and unasked sheds it all - clothes and inhibitions.
Vidya Balan has delivered a brilliant performance. Naseeruddin Shah reminds us of the 1980s stars, Emraan Hashmi has a mystic charm to him. He entertains with his dialogue delivery and is refreshing to see him in a different role than seen before. Tusshar appears fantastic in his role. While Kapoor will be seen playing a script-writer and Smitha's love interest, the nature of Hashmi's role is still unknown. Anju Mahendru, Rajesh Sharma, Shivani Tanskale, Mangal Kenkre and Imran Hasnee have also done justice their job.
Final Word: This movie is a good entertainer.
