The 71-year-old 'Godfather' star Al Pacino is set to make his animated film debut in 'Despicable Me 2' as he has been cast to voice a supervillain.
Al Pacino, who is famous for playing a mobster in several iconic movies, will replace Javier Bardem in the film. Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove and Russell Brand are set return for the July 3, 2013 release.
Details of Pacino's role are still kept secret, but his character will be the archenemy of Gru. While Bardem was originally tapped to voice evil genius El Macho, it has been rumored that Pacino could tackle a different villainous character which is adjusted to his personality.
The first film was a big hit for Universal Picturs and Illumination Entertainment. The $69 million-budgeted Despicable Me opened on July 9, 2010 and went on to earn $543.1 million worldwide.
Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin are set to direct the sequel from a script by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.
Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy will produce for Illumination Entertainment. Creative Executive Kiska Higgs will oversee the project for the studio.
